The Activity/AssignmentMaterials
o Handout: one side has “Parts of a Movie Poster;” one side has “Creating a Movie Poster.”
o Three or four different movie posters: one for each group
The Activity
(1) The class is divided into three or four groups of four or five students.
(2) The groups are each given a different movie poster.
(3) Each member of the group is to use the poster and fill out the handout, “Creating a Movie Poster.”
(4) The first group in which all members fill out the handout correctly win a prize.
The Assignment
After the activity is completed, the class is lead through the side of the handout titled, “Parts of a Movie Poster.” Having an understanding of the terms, students are to create a movie poster for Freak the Mighty. They are to use the “Parts of a Movie Poster” as guide/checklist for the components that their movie poster needs to include.
Outcome
o Engaging use of course material, namely Freak the Mighty
o Encourages competitiveness but in a comfortable group setting environment so that individuals are not signalled out
o Incorporates media strand into English curriculum
o Encourages creativity
o Encourages teamwork
o Appeals to visual learners
